Responsible for development and implementation of internal policies that govern management and police operations, department budget, long term policing strategies and community outreach programs.

Provide information collected from various personnel throughout the department to the Chief and other decision makers so they can make informed decisions on public safety and departmental matters.

Interact with other governmental organizations and the media to help facilitate department objectives.

Assist the Police Administration in maintaining the public trust by conducting administrative investigations of officers involved in criminal activities, use of force incidents, or violations of departmental policies.

Investigate complaints of misconduct, whether received from citizens or employees in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law.

Processes public Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request to ensuring that sought information, reports and documents can be released to the public.

Enforce traffic laws and parking ordinances in the city. Coordinate with Department of Public Works to ensure that the police fleet is maintained and that proper street signs are posted throughout the city.

Works with community organizations and government agencies with special events such as runs/walks, parades, block party events, ect.

Oversees the departments Auxiliary Officer and Crossing Guards program which are vital to augmenting police services.

Primarily tasked with coordinating, developing, and implementing training for all department personnel, sworn and civilian. Works closely with other units to assist with requested or identified training needs.

Oversees all training records for department personnel and manages indoor firearm ranges specializing in firearm and tactical training.

Training Unit and Crime Prevention Unit host the Citizens Police Academy which is a 10 week community outreach program designed to provide an insider perspective of police work and the legal system to citizens.

Responsible for establishing, managing and maintaining programs and initiatives related to preventing and reducing the opportunity for crime to occur. Oversees community outreach programs such as the Citizens Police Academy, National Night Out, Submit a Tip, School Resource Officer program.

The unit works closely with neighborhood watch groups and when requested provides training and makes presentations.

Address crime problems through collaborative efforts with various government agencies, businesses and the community.

Specialized Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams are equipped with specialized firearms and equipment including heavy body armor, ballistic shields, entry tools, advanced night vision optics, and surveillance equipment for covertly determining the positions of hostages, hostage takers, or barricaded persons inside enclosed structures.

SWAT teams are specially trained to deploy against threats and situations beyond the capabilities of ordinary police units that are deemed “high risk”.

Based on a geo-policing model, officers who are part of CRT engage directly with citizens in neighborhoods plagued by persistent problems and become experts on the needs, issues, and concerns of the people within the targeted neighborhoods they serve.

Build effective relationships with citizens and businesses to jointly identify, prioritize and solve problems.

Field Intelligence Officers primary responsibility is to collect, compile, analyze and disseminate intelligence information related to criminal activity and other jurisdictions that may adversely affect the city.

Works closely with civilian and National Guard crime analysis who conduct systematic analysis of identifying and analyzing crime patterns or trends. The information helps other units to deploy resources in a more effective manner and assist investigative units in identifying and apprehending suspects.

Responsible for attending monthly meetings that address gang activity and homeland security related issues.

Primary function is the processing of crime scenes and managing collected physical evidence of the department. Officers receive special training in processing crime scenes, fingerprint analysis, photographing techniques, blood stain patterns, DNA collection, and proper evidence handling.

Crime Scene Investigators usually makes some sort of initial interpretation of the evidence at hand and documents the actions taken by the investigators at the scene. Effective documentation allows for an accurate re-creation of the crime scene by a third party, such as a Forensic Scientist.

Prepare investigative reports and testify in court about their findings, beliefs, and processes.

Maintain active warrants and ensures these records are readily available for warrant confirmations, executions or court recalls by processing and entering documents into the National Crime Information Center.

Focus on locating and arresting individuals that are fugitives from justice or have active warrants issued by a Judge ordering their arrests.

Are members of the United States Marshalls Fugitive Regional Task Force which is made up of officers from Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies and they work together in locating and capturing wanted persons.

Detectives are plainclothes officers who actively pursue those individuals or organized groups who manufacture, distribute or sell illegal drugs. In addition, focuses on enforcing laws related to illegal firearms, human trafficking and Alcoholic Beverage Control Laws.

Specialize in conducting operations that focus on physical and technical surveillance, executing search warrants, and eavesdropping warrants.

Develop confidential sources and pose as undercover officers.

Prepare investigative reports and testify in court about their findings, beliefs, and processes.

Plainclothes detectives who specialize in following up on criminal investigations as well as non-criminal matters involving youth (under 16 years of age).

Work to deter juvenile crimes and rehabilitate juveniles to become productive adults in the community.

Works closely with family members, school officials and others to gain understanding of youths to protect the community from further delinquent acts.

Prepare investigative reports and testify in Family Court about their findings, beliefs and processes.

Detectives are plainclothes officers who primary responsibility is following up with investigations for criminal as well as non-criminal matters. Investigations can range in nature from a suspicious incident to serious felonies.

Work with Patrol Officers and forensic specialists to gather and analyze evidence, collect witness testimony and identify potential suspects.

Assist other detectives in piecing together series of events, draft and execute search warrants.

Prepare investigative reports and testify in court about their findings, beliefs, and processes.

Wear the department’s uniform, very visible representative who primary responsibility is to patrol assigned areas on foot, bicycle or motorized vehicle, responding promptly to emergencies or calls for service.

Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.

Conducts thorough preliminary investigations of all offenses.

Prepare written reports and testify in court to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases.
